As part of the series of activities to commemorate the International Day of Families, a Public Dialogue was organized by the Department of Family & Culture at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. The Dialogue took place on 8th May, 2018 at the Uganda National Cultural Center (National Theater). Various presentations were made on the theme of this year’s commemoration.
May 15th is dedicated as the annual observance of the International Day for Families (IDF) worldwide. Globally, this year’s theme is “Families and inclusive societies” which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 “Eradicating extreme poverty”, but also other Goals, such as achieving universal education, promoting gender equality, reducing child mortality, and improving maternal health.
In Uganda, the theme chosen for this year’s commemoration is “The role of the Family in a globalized world” The theme recognizes the fact that in the industrialized world, the ‘traditional’ breadwinner/homemaker family no longer constitutes the main family form or the only normative environment in which children are born and raised. In the developing world, we do not find the same general acceptance of diverse family forms, but we are witnessing an increase in dual-earner households, single parenting and female or child headed households, an upsurge in the number of women in the labor force, and a significant aging of populations.
A series of activities has been lined up for the Commemoration which will take place on 15th May, 2018 in Luwero District at Kasana Playground.
