The National Older Persons Conference took place on 19th - 20th September, 2018 at the Golf Course Hotel, Kampala under the theme “Championing the Rights of Older Persons”. The Conference is a precursor to the celebrations of the United Nations International Day for Older Persons to be held on 1st October, 2018. The Conference was officially opened by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Janat Mukwaya.
The main objective of the conference is to initiate a national discussion on older persons’ rights and wellbeing.
The conference drew a wide spectrum of participants including Members of the Parliament on the Committee for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Focal Point Persons from Ministries of Health, Justice, Agriculture, Government development programmes including Operation Wealth Creation, Uganda Entrepreneurship Programme, Development Partners including DFID, Irish Aid, UNICEF, UNDP among others, Organisations working with older persons, District Community Development Officers, District Chairpersons for Older Persons and Old Persons Groups
At the end of the Conference, recommendations were formulated and a work plan of activities for the next one year adopted.
